Identifying Self-Care Problems

Caregiver, friends and family members should all look out for signs that an individual is not maintaining an acceptable level of self-care. Here are some common indicators:

  • Poor chronic disease control
  • Unexpected failure of an acute illness to be resolved
  • Frequent unexpected visits to doctor or emergency room
  • Cancelled medical appointments
  • Lack of understanding of disease or regimen
  • Observed or reported treatment lapses
  • Unexpected decline in functioning
  • The resident “labeled” noncompliant by health care professional
