PACE Senior Caregiver Spotlight: Cassandra Jefferson

Why Cassandra Jefferson Choose PACE for Her Mother

How PACE Lightens the Load of Family Caregivers

Consider this: 34 million people in the United States are caring for an older loved one. In fact, approximately 80 percent of long-term care services are provided by family and friends.

The statistics are staggering and speak to the incredible burden on so many caregivers struggling to keep up with their loved ones’ needs. Many of these caregivers have no specialized medical knowledge or training. Most are also trying to hold down a full-time job and other daily responsibilities while providing for a loved one’s care.

Cassandra Jefferson was in that position. Her mother, Lucille Bell, had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was falling regularly while living alone. After Cassandra moved her mother into her home, she soon realized the around-the-clock demands of her mother’s care. Although she had her brother’s help, Cassandra found it impossible to do anything for herself. Even a quick trip to the grocery store was difficult because Lucille could not be left alone. In addition, Cassandra was finding it harder to keep up with the pace of her mother’s growing medical needs and appointments. She did not want to take her mother to a nursing home, but it was the next step—until she found PACE.

HEAR CASSANDRA JEFFERSON’S STORY

Since Lucille has been enrolled in PACE, Cassandra has been able to work a normal 8-hour shift and have some time to herself or to run errands. Her mother has door-to-door transportation from her home to the PACE center, where she can spend the day safely engaging with other residents, socializing, and receiving quality medical care to manage her multiple sclerosis. Lucille’s nurses communicate regularly with Cassandra, notifying her whenever there is a change in her mother’s care plan or medications.

“Whatever she needs, PACE provides. I could not have done that alone…Anybody that wants to take care of their loved one…PACE is the way to go. I can’t express to you the joy that I feel now that my mother is in PACE.” – Cassandra Jefferson
