The leaves are changing

And so are the health needs of seniors

Anyone who has ever spent an autumn in Cleveland knows that it’s all about orange and brown, and we’re not just talking football! The falling autumn leaves look beautiful in Northeast Ohio, and it truly is a magical time to live in our area. It’s also a time of transition, as we go from the balmy dog days of August to the crisp chill of November. Mental and physical health alike can be put to the test this time of year, so here are some tips to help Cleveland seniors enjoy a great autumn season.

Get outside!

Before you know it, Cleveland will be covered by a layer of ice and snow, and that’s when it will get very hard to enjoy the outdoors in Cleveland. That’s why it’s important to get out and enjoy this fall. Take a walk around the neighborhood or have a loved one grab your wheelchair and help you enjoy a stroll through one of our many parks. The fresh air is healthy for the mind, body, and soul!

Wear layers.

The weather in Cleveland is tricky in autumn. It can be cold in the morning, muggy in the afternoon, and then chilly again by evening. You must literally be prepared for three seasons of weather in one day. Layering ensures that you are prepared for swinging temperatures, so you are never caught unprepared!

Vaccinate.

Of course, you should be visiting with your physician before taking any course of treatment, but this is the time to get vaccinated against influenza, and the bugs that attack our systems this time of year. Get prepared for another cold winter by making sure you are fully vaccinated for the season.

Keep a fall emergency kit ready.

Cleveland in the fall can bring some high winds and rain showers. Those storms can knock out power, and the last thing you want is to spend a night in the dark. Candles, flashlights, blankets, water, and extra batteries are necessities to keep you going when the power decides to stop.
