Early Warning Signs That a Loved One May Need Extra Support

It’s not always easy to notice when an aging parent or loved one is starting to struggle, but small changes can be important signals. Being aware of these early warning signs can help families step in before a crisis occurs.

Watch for safety concerns at home such as falls, difficulty navigating stairs, unexplained bruises, or hesitation to use certain rooms. Pay attention to household management issues like unopened mail, unpaid bills, spoiled food, or a home that is becoming neglected. Physical changes may also appear, including mobility problems, unexpected weight loss, or trouble with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or preparing meals.

Medication and health management issues are another red flag—missed doses, confusion about prescriptions, or difficulty keeping medical appointments. Social isolation can develop as well, with reduced outings or withdrawal from friends and family. Cognitive or mood changes such as increasing forgetfulness, confusion, or ongoing low mood should not be overlooked.

Other signs include difficulty driving or getting around, wandering or disorientation, and challenges with executive functioning like forgetting routine tasks or failing to follow through on plans.

Recognizing these signs early allows families to seek support, explore care options, and ensure safety and dignity.
