Social Workers Change Lives: Celebrating a Life-Changing Profession During Social Work Month

March is National Social Work month, a time to recognize the dedication, compassion and expertise of social workers who improve lives and strengthen communities every day. From helping individuals navigate complex systems to advocating for vulnerable populations, social workers play a vital role in enhancing well-being and connecting people to the resources they need to thrive.

Tamara Wilson and Selena Pittman

At McGregor, that impact is seen daily through the work of professionals like Selena Pittman, Director of Social and Support Services for the McGregor PACE program  (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly).

“There are very high stakes in what is expected in social services and assessment,” Pittman said. “We make sure homes are safe, conduct home visits, monitor behavior and participation, understand family dynamics, and provide participants with resources for domestic issues. We also act as guides, connecting individuals and families with services that can truly help them.”

Pittman describes her role as being in constant motion, managing a staff of 16 social workers located in three Ohio counties, Cuyahoga, Lorain and Elyria.

PACE is an insurance and health care provider governed under CMS (Center for Medicare Services) the federal government, and partners with the Ohio Department of Aging. It coordinates health care and supportive services for older adults who qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare.

The program’s primary goal is to help participants remain safely in their homes and communities for as long as possible, whether that’s in their own residence, a group home or assisted living. McGregor PACE has five facilities, Forest Hill located in East Cleveland, Emery located in Warrensville, Brooklyn located in Brooklyn, Rockynol located in Summit and Elyria located in Lorain.

“Our mission is to maintain emotional, psychological, spiritual and financial balance by connecting people to resources that allow them to sustain themselves in the community,” Pittman explained.

In addition to managing the social work department, Pittman oversees the Central Supply Department, Environmental Services Department, the Forest Hill Building

and partnerships with 15 affiliated homes. Pittman is a Licensed Social Worker, a notary for the State of Ohio and is part of the Lean Six Sigma initiative.

This year marks Pittman’s 15th anniversary with McGregor, where she has risen through the ranks through dedication, expertise and a genuine commitment to those she serves. Despite the demanding workload, Pittman finds deep meaning in the profession.

“If you have the life skills to problem solve, nurture, listen and motivate, social work is a good fit,” she said. “Being a social worker is watching people become their own hero – giving them options and choices so they can create their own destiny.”

Another social worker making a big difference at McGregor is Tamara Wilson, Director of Social Services and Admissions at McGregor Gardens. Wilson began her career as a case manager working with individuals experiencing mental illness before transitioning into skilled nursing care. In 2023, she earned her master’s degree in social work.

“For many families, simply understanding what services exist can bring enormous relief, according to Wilson.

“One of the areas where I can really help people is when I notice that older adults and their families simply aren’t aware of the services available to them,” Wilson said. “They need help navigating the system. I’ve seen so many families who didn’t know what services were available become so relieved and grateful once they receive direction, information and support. Programs like PACE and adult day care can make all the difference for adults who are struggling to find their way.”

Wilson says working in senior services allows her to continue learning while supporting both patients and their families. “I love working in senior services because I can help my patients while continuing to learn about the senior experience, as well as the family’s experience,” she said.

Wilson recently celebrated her fifth anniversary with McGregor.

She believes McGregor’s comprehensive continuum of care makes a significant difference for families in the community.

“McGregor is so beneficial to the community,” Wilson said. “We provide services at every level of care, from independent living to assisted living, skilled nursing, PACE and hospice – so we can meet residents and their families wherever they are in their journey.”

“My passion is supporting patients, but also their families,” she said. “In senior care, we’re dealing with medical, emotional and social challenges all at once.”

Wilson also credits the strong team around her for making work meaningful.

During Social Work Month, professionals like Pittman and Wilson remind us that social work is more than a career, it’s a calling. Through compassion, advocacy and connection, social workers empower individuals and families to overcome challenges and build stronger, healthier communities.

“I can’t say enough about the McGregor Gardens social work team that I lead,” Wilson said. “The support I get from the team I work with every day makes this one of the most rewarding professional experiences I’ve ever had.”
