Stay Active During the Winter Season

Ideas for Exploring New Hobbies and Interests

The cold temperatures and icy conditions in Cleveland during the winter can keep us indoors more than we would like—and this is especially true for older adults living at home. We have compiled this list to give you some ideas of activities to change things up and enjoy the winter season indoors.

  • Make a scrapbook. Perhaps you would enjoy scrapbooking some important times in your life. If you do not feel like going through your own photos and memories, you could make a book for a family member. For example, ask your child for photos from a recent vacation, or ask a grandchild for their favorite photos from their senior year of high school. Using their photos, you can create a special book that they will treasure.
  • Turn on some music and move your body. When was the last time you danced just for fun? The winter is a great time to listen to favorite songs and dance. Bonus: It is great exercise! And, if you are unable to dance, you can still get a great mood boost from listening to music.
  • Learn to crochet or knit. This seems like a cliche, but both are very worthwhile hobbies: You can make items like scarves or headbands that will keep you and others in your family warm. If you have extra materials and time, you can make items to donate to a local shelter or charity. This can give you a great sense of productivity and accomplishment.
  • Practice your green thumb indoors. Adding houseplants to your home can have a real impact on your well-being. Plants can improve air quality and reduce stress. If you have a cat or dog, be sure you do your research on the best plants that are safe for pets. We suggest the spider plant, a parlor palm, or a ponytail palm.
  • Make bird feeders for spring. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can’t dream about spring. Use this time to make something you will enjoy later on! There are many bird feeder tutorials online. There are ideas for very practical and easy-to-make feeders using common household objects.

We hope you enjoy these activities this winter! If you are an older adult who is feeling anxious or lonesome about this winter season, please reach out to our team to learn more about PACE services.
