Learning Leadership Through Local Governance

Each monthly session has been insightful and eye-opening to say the least. As part of the The Leadership Lorain Class of 2026, we have been given many opportunities to learn about Lorain County, sometimes even behind the scenes.
Leadership Lorain’s Law & Governance Day offers participants a unique opportunity to gain firsthand insights into the principles of leadership as practiced in local government. The event featured discussions with three distinguished mayors from Lorain County: Jack Bradley, Mayor of the City of Lorain; Kevin Brubaker, Mayor of the City of Elyria; and Mark Spaetzel, Mayor of the City of Avon Lake. This engaging session encouraged classmates to explore the multifaceted nature of community leadership, civic engagement, and the practical challenges faced by local government officials.
Mayor Jack Bradley shares his dedication to revitalizing Lorain, emphasizing community service and demonstrating the work of a servant leader as a cornerstone of his leadership. He outlines his aspirations for economic growth, improved public safety, and fostering a sense of pride among residents. Kevin Brubaker, Mayor of Elyria, discusses his commitment to transparent governance, inclusivity, and responsive city administration. He highlights goals such as expanding business opportunities and supporting educational initiatives for young people. Mark Spaetzel, Mayor of Avon Lake, underscores the importance of sustainable development and environmental stewardship, aiming to enhance quality of life and preserve community assets.
Law & Governance Day empowers emerging leaders to learn from these mayors’ experiences, understand their goals and aspirations, and envision how local governance shapes vibrant, resilient communities.
