All About Encore Cleveland and Encore 55+ Learning

Meaningful Jobs and Learning Opportunities for Seniors

Helping Seniors Stay Active and Engaged in Their Community

Some seniors are forced by their employers to retire earlier than they wanted. Others have already retired, but desire to reenter the workforce and stay active. No matter the reason, many seniors are seeking a “second act,” an opportunity to use their skills, talents, and knowledge for the benefit of the community. In fact, many seniors might find their dream jobs after retirement!

Encore Cleveland

Encore.org is a national non-profit organization founded to bridge the divide between younger generations of workers and seniors age 50 and older and create a multigenerational workforce. Locally, the Cleveland Foundation started Encore Cleveland in 2013.

According to Encore Cleveland, as of 2030, more than 30 percent of the population will be 55 or older. This initiative works to connect and fund a network of area organizations to provide these seniors with meaningful employment in the Northeast Ohio region. Encore Cleveland provides many resources for seniors depending on their needs and preferences, including:

  • Ways to volunteer with youth, adults, and non-profit organizations in Cleveland
  • Ways to give back to the community through compensated employment
  • Resources for starting a new business

Encore 55+ Learning Program

Perhaps instead of continuing your career post-retirement, you would rather spend time furthering your education. Cuyahoga Community College’s Encore 55+ Learning program is designed to promote lifelong learning for individuals age 55 and older. The program has three components: Encore Campus Fridays, Encore on the Go, and Neighborhood Scholars.

Encore Campus Fridays are starting again in September 2021, with in-person courses offered at the Tri-C Eastern, Western, and Westshore campuses. Encore on the Go courses are offered via Webex over a 6-week period. Neighborhood Scholars is a program that connects seniors to Greater Cleveland through various community partners. All Encore 55+ Learning courses are taught by subject matter experts and cover topics like history, exercise, entertainment, art, religion, literature, and more.

We hope that you will take advantage of these resources for you or a loved one in Cuyahoga County. If we can provide any additional information, please reach out to our team.
