Simple Fixes to Keep Them Independent

McGregor PACE wants to keep your loved one living independently.

Here are some modifications that you can make to help!

The McGregor Foundation does some incredible things with local organizations that are dedicated to making living in Cleveland better for all of its residents. Of course, some of the initiatives that we are most proud of are those involving the well-being of our senior population. That’s why we partner with the Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation to help residents make modifications to their homes to enable them to stay in them longer and maintain their independence. We know that simple modifications can help seniors remain in their homes longer, and when coupled with the McGregor PACE programs that are available, we help residents stay independent for an average of 24 months longer than those who aren’t in the program.

Thinking about making some modifications? We’ve got some places to start that you might not have thought about. Take a look at these modifications designed to maintain independence:

Swap out your round doorknobs.

Round doorknobs can be hard to grab if you have arthritic hands, so replacing them with lever handles that go up and down will help your loved one get in and out of rooms with ease.

Go touchless.

Touchless faucets in the bathroom can help eliminate another problem for arthritic hands: knobs. Knobs can be hard to grip and turn, and you can eliminate these issues by replacing them with touchless faucet fixtures.

Get smart.

There are many home-monitoring systems that go beyond the typical alert necklaces and bracelets that seniors have been using for years. If you are a caregiver that can’t always be there to monitor your loved one, you can get systems that track everything from when someone gets out of bed to when they take their medicine by using special sensors. You can also use systems to do things like control lights and appliances to help save money and keep everyone safe and sound.

Shed some light.

A big part of helping a home facilitate a senior’s changing needs is changing the lighting. Bright nightlights can help seniors find their way through a hallway at night. Tap lights can help eliminate the need to turn knobs or grab small chains to help lights come on. And table lamps can provide better lighting for reading than overhead options.

We’ve got ideas! If you are looking to help your loved one stay independent longer, McGregor PACE can help! Contact us today to find out more ways you can help your loved one stay in their home and spend more time in the place they are the most comfortable.
