The PACE model of care dates back to the early 1970s when one of the nation’s first adult day centers opened in San Francisco to serve the families of immigrants. As you can read in our program’s history, it took years of work and funding to form the National PACE Association in 1994. At that time, there were 11 PACE organizations operating in 9 states.
As of July 2021, there are 272 PACE centers operating in 30 states. Approximately 55,000 seniors are enrolled in the program nationwide. This is incredible growth, and it speaks volumes to the benefit that PACE provides in our communities. As you will see in the National PACE Association’s PACE by the Numbers infographic, linked below, PACE provides an innovative model of care that allows eligible seniors to remain in their homes.

- PACE serves 21,918 meals a day at centers across the country.
- PACE provides an average of 16 transportation trips per month per participant.
- PACE helps 95 percent of current participants continue to live in their community.
- PACE provides high-quality outcomes, with less than one ER visit per year per participant.
- PACE costs taxpayers 13 percent less than the cost of Medicaid services.
